In this video, journey with us into the heart of Maazi Concepts, where we reimagine infection prevention in South Africa’s healthcare spaces—turning everyday moments into opportunities for safety, care, and connection.
Picture this:
No more clipboards. No more silent observers standing by. Just seamless, invisible protection powered by the tap of your bank card. With our smart blend of NFC and radio frequency technology, patients and healthcare workers alike become part of the infection control story—effortlessly triggering hand sanitation devices, creating real-time health records, and sharing vital data without ever giving up their privacy.
From the comfort of home to the doors of the clinic, our mobile app keeps you in the loop. View your health updates. Track your sanitation actions. Know that you’re part of a system working towards something bigger—safer spaces, healthier communities, and a future where hand hygiene is second nature.
🌺 Why does this matter?
Because nearly 20 million people walk through just 383 facilities each year, and with compliance at only 40%, it’s time for a change. With Maazi Concepts, we’re turning insights into action, using data to identify risks before they spread and to keep healthcare as healing as it should be.
In this inspiring video, I, the 23-year-old founder of Tropical Paradise Smoothie Bar, share my entrepreneurial journey from humble beginnings in Venda-Lumo to building a thriving, health-focused business while completing my final year at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Growing up surrounded by an abundance of tropical fruits, my mother’s homemade smoothies sparked the idea to create delicious, affordable, and nutritious fast food options for busy spaces like universities and corporate events.
Tropical Paradise Smoothie Bar isn’t just about smoothies—it’s about solving the problem of limited access to healthy food in South Africa, a country facing rising health challenges due to poor diet options.
From bootstrapping with my bursary allowance to developing mobile smoothie units and securing funding for future growth, we are committed to making healthy living easy, accessible, and flavorful.
“Blind people see through their imagination,” says Shakila Maharaj, founder of Shazacin. This profound insight, born from her experience of losing sight in her early twenties, has driven her pioneering work in audio description technology. Through Shazacin, Maharaj is transforming how visually impaired people experience the world, challenging the misconception that blindness means living in darkness.
Her innovation, Describe AT, emerged from a crucial gap in accessibility. While audio description was established in Western countries, South Africa lacked the infrastructure to deliver this service effectively. The breakthrough came in 2020 when SmartXchange recognised the potential of Maharaj’s work and, together with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), provided the seed funding to develop the Describe AT mobile app.
The app’s ingenious feature is its ability to automatically sync audio descriptions with any video content playing on external devices, eliminating the need for special infrastructure or sighted assistance. This technology has expanded beyond film and television to include virtual tourism experiences, allowing visually impaired users to “visit” South African heritage sites through detailed audio descriptions.
